Iowa set a record for new businesses registered in the 2021 fiscal year, Secretary of State Paul Pate said Monday.

The Office of the Secretary of State received registrations for 33,260 new business entities — or about one new business every 16 minutes — between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021.

It was up from 24,481 new businesses registered in the 2020 fiscal year and 24,720 registered in the 2019 fiscal year.

“Despite the pandemic, this data shows that Iowa had a substantial amount of economic activity over the last 12 months,” Pate said in a news release.

More than 87 percent of new businesses registered through the Fast Track Filing system that debuted in 2018.
